STUDENT COMMUNITY HEALTH PLEDGE

On Friday, in Fall Update #12, the published the Champlain College Community Health Pledge was sent to students.  Faculty will get more information in the coming days on the faculty and staff health pledge.

STUDENTS ARRIVING AUGUST 15-17

Our first on-campus students will start moving into Champlain residence halls starting on Saturday, August 15th through Monday, August 17th. This group of students will be quarantining on campus based on where they are traveling from or how they are arriving on campus. They will leave their residence halls for testing and structured groups activities. We are focused on engaging and staying connected with students during this time, in particular first year students who are transitioning to college life under challenging and unusual circumstances.

Please be aware that the students on campus this time are under quarantine as you consider your time on campus during this period.

FACULTY TRAVEL & QUARANTINE REMINDER

As a reminder, the State Travel guidelines apply to all residents, and includes a required quarantine period for any residents who travel outside of the state of Vermont to a county with more than 400 cases per million. This includes any kind of travel, for example: driving to drop off a child at their College or University or a vacation out of state.  Note that the adherence to the state quarantine guidelines is an explicit requirement of the Community Health Pledge.

PARTICIPATE IN CHAMPLAIN’S COMMUNITY READ

This year, Champlain College has been accepted into the Vermont Reads program offered by the Vermont Humanities Council. This effort is being spearheaded by the Library and will offer multiple opportunities for the campus to engage with the 2020 Vermont Reads book selection,  The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. It tells the story of teen Starr Carter in the aftermath of witnessing a police shooting of her childhood friend. It was an important topic before this summer, but even more timely with the current unrest. As a young adult novel, it provides an easy entry point for complex topics of racial inequity and provides an opportunity for campus wide discussions. The Library is currently working to secure additional copies of this book for circulating on campus and is designing campus-wide events to support the program including a virtual film screening, discussion of the themes in the film and the book with Saint Michael’s College, a panel discussion for education students, an art workshop led by Jen Berger, and a speaking engagement with local poet Rajnii Eddins. If you are interested in including this book in your syllabus this fall or helping to organize other Vermont Reads events on campus please complete this form.

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN FACULTY MASK MONTAGE VIDEO

As we welcome our students back to classes in just a couple of weeks, we are kickstarting a public health engagement campaign coined #LetUsCare. And we dare you to take part!

How do you do so? For starters, we invite you to send in a short video of yourself wearing a mask and waving at the camera (i.e. your phone). You could be in your home office, your office on campus, a classroom, your backyard, the quad; wherever your heart desires and wherever you feel most comfortable.

We will then take these short video clips and turn them into a video montage, waving and welcoming students back to classes—from near and far. While some of us may be apart for another few months, this is just one way we can keep the Champlain community feeling connected. For instructions on how to record your video and where to send it, click on this doc. Please send by Friday, August 14.

And don’t forget, Be a Champ. Wear a Mask. #LetUsCare!
