The 2nd First Day – advice for an easy start

The CLT has a brief Presentation that will make you smile and has some helpful tips and resources for making the most of the 2nd first day of class.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR WORK/LIFE BALANCE AND REMOTE INSTRUCTION

“Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.” – Parker Palmer

The transition from face-to-face teaching, mentoring and advising to remote instruction may be challenging for some. “It may be helpful to remember this is not the time to create a perfect online course that adheres to best principles for online learning, but rather a time to transition, support ourselves and our students in this endeavor, and reach out for assistance as need be.” (Angela Gale, CCO). For the sake of faculty wellbeing and student success, we offer this article on the CLT Website . It has 10 helpful guidelines aligned with the tips for maintaining a healthy work/life balance as a remote instructor.

The CLT will continue to gather helpful tips and articles about work/life balance over the next few weeks.

HOW TO MANAGE REMOTE OFFICE HOURS

Students may need to connect with you for office hours now more than ever. The college makes software readily available so that you can continue to hold office hours as expected. Google Hangouts Meet provides a simple way to hold office hours remotely. Here’s how! You can pair Google Hangout Meet with Google Calendar to manage remote office hours.  This allows you to set aside time blocks for meeting with students, but requires your presence only at times for which someone has signed up. The article on work-life balance referenced above provides tips for setting student expectations around your availability.

CAREER COLLABORATIVE & INSIGHT MILESTONE UPDATE

Career Collaborative is now 100% virtual. The InSight milestones deadline is extended to April 1 and all pending InSight milestones are now virtual and accessible through Canvas. Student requests for career coaching appointments are available through Handshake, or by contacting careercollaborative@champlain.edu, (802) 860-2720, or by reaching out to the division specific Career Coach.

CANVAS COURSE FOR STUDENTS TO SUPPORT REMOTE INSTRUCTION

We have developed a new canvas course called Remote Learning Guide to support students as they ease into remote instruction.  The course will be shared with students today in a message from their Dean.  The course offers tips for remote learning, how to access campus services during this time and how to be a successful online student.  It is our hope that this course will grow with additional resources for students.
