Faculty & Academic Staff Briefing #3
Dear Faculty and Academic Staff:
This daily briefing includes:
- FERPA Reminders
- Attendance Policy
- Fundamentals of DEI for Faculty – Delayed Release
Our Registrar, Tara Arneson, has added some great reminders about how FERPA applies in a remote learning environment to our Faculty FAQ document. Check out the newly bookmarked section called FERPA reminders to find the content.
You may have an attendance policy in your syllabus that you need to adjust for the remote environment. The College does not require you to take attendance in your class, however, it is important to have frequent checkpoints/assessments where you can tell which students are engaging with the course. Online discussion participation, webinar attendance or assignment submissions can provide a sense of student participation. The CLT has developed an article on activities and discussions that is a good reference.
“FUNDAMENTALS OF DEI FOR FACULTY” – DELAYED RELEASE
We are suspending the Beta release of the “Fundamentals of DEI for Faculty” Canvas Course for at least the next two weeks to give faculty more time and space during this period of transition of remote instruction. The material is ready, and we look forward to making it available to all Burlington campus-based faculty at such a time as you can reasonably be expected to engage with it. The course is optional but you are highly encouraged to engage with in some way over the next several months; it provides overviews and actionable takeaways for commonly requested professional development topics including: DEI vocabulary, implicit bias, inclusion in the classroom, student experiences at Champlain, tokenism, and understanding racial, gender and sexual diversity.
Ongoing communication and resources for Faculty and Staff will be posted on The View. It’s a good idea to check the site daily as new communications and FAQs are posted regularly. Finally, all Faculty Daily Briefing emails are stored here and also hosted on The View.
