VIRTUAL GRADUATION MAY 9 AND IN-PERSON CEREMONY

In Laurie’s video message yesterday she announced that we would not be holding an in-person commencement ceremony on May 9th. Instead we will be hosting a virtual ceremony for our students on the same date as well as an in-person ceremony during the 20-21 academic year.   Graduating students, friends and families are invited to share their ideas for a virtual commencement here. Planning for the in-person events will begin once we know what is possible in the context of the current health crisis, For up-to-date commencement related information please visit the Commencement 2020 webpage.

SUMMER COURSES WILL BE OFFERED REMOTELY

As you might have anticipated, the College has decided that our summer courses will all be offered remotely, either fully online through Canvas or as “Virtual Hybrid” (a combination of asynchronous Canvas and synchronous Google Hangouts/Zoom classes.) We will not be holding face-to-face courses this summer. The Registrar’s Office is making the necessary changes today, before registration opens on Monday. The Summer schedule updates will be reflected tomorrow in Student Planning. Students will be receiving a message from their dean on Monday with this update.

We recognize that there are a number of other events that take place on campus over the summer, including academic programs for high school students, prospective student events, and summer orientation events for incoming students.  The status of these programs and events are still under review.

GETTING READY FOR THE IDEA STUDENT RATINGS OF INSTRUCTION

The IDEA SRI will be open to students this Monday, April 6, and will close on April 20. You should have already received an email notification to plan for your IDEA survey. Two more automated email notifications will come to your inbox over the weekend. (Check your spam folder.)

Given that we are utilizing remote instruction, students will complete surveys differently than they have in the past.  Students will need to complete the survey on their own time and we are asking students to complete a shorter version of the IDEA instrument than usual. Here are guidelines for administering IDEA during remote instruction. Set up your survey at the IDEA-CL Faculty Portal.

Because students are on their own to complete the survey asynchronously, please check in and encourage students to provide feedback. It is also important for you to monitor student responses during the open survey period.  For more information on IDEA visit the All About IDEA Google folder or the Champlain IDEA web page.

TEACHING TIPS: TIME ZONES

Students (and faculty) who moved to a different timezone should update their settings in Canvas, as well as update their settings in Google Calendar. This will ensure that due dates and calendar invites are presented accurately. Please share this tip with your students.
