A MESSAGE FROM JEFF BROWN: SECURITY, ZOOM, AND GOOGLE HANGOUTS MEET

Over the past few weeks we’ve adapted to new ways of working, finding community, and serving our students. An increasingly important component of these efforts have been video conferencing tools such as Google Hangouts Meet and Zoom.

There has been much in the media and on various information security outlets recently about Zoom in particular and, without delving into eye-rolling technical details, we wanted to provide some guidance.

Unless you are using a paid Champlain Zoom account we strongly suggest that faculty use Google Hangouts Meet for instruction and when working with students. Free Zoom accounts do not offer the same security controls or features as do our paid Champlain Zoom accounts. I’ll also remind you of our suggestions on how to safeguard your Hangouts Meet and Zoom sessions.

Zoom does have many appropriate uses such as hosting larger meetings, webinars, and virtual events. Applying the safeguard strategies linked above is still a good idea and we know that many have adopted these practices already, well done!

Lastly, a reminder that no College business should be conducted with personal (i.e. non-Champlain) accounts for Zoom or any other service. Our Champlain accounts give us access to a broad variety of services and platforms, so if you have a specific need please do not hesitate to reach out to Champ Support so that we can assist in identifying a safe, appropriate option for your specific use case.

Thank you for all that you are doing to (safely!) serve our students and community.

REMINDER: VIDEO REQUEST FOR VIRTUAL COMMENCEMENT DUE TUESDAY, APRIL 21

The EMC team is putting together a video of faculty clapping, snapping, and waving as one element of our virtual commencement. Please consider donning your regalia and recording a quick video of yourself clapping that will be edited into a fantastic celebratory piece that will help close out the 142nd Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2020. Paula did a great job with her home shoot this weekend, this is a perfect example! Check out the complete instructions and a PSA from Adam Walker on staging your home shoot. We really hope you can participate as we work to design the most creative and heartfelt commencement experience possible.

IDEA SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED

At the request of several faculty members, we have extended the IDEA Student Rating of Instruction period through Friday, April 24 at midnight. Please encourage your students to participate through this link. Check here for guidance on administering the survey during remote instruction.
