Update from Dean of Students to Burlington, VT Students

Hello Burlington Campus Students–

This email is a follow-up message to the communication you received on Wednesday, 3/11/20 from interim president Laurie Quinn.  If you haven’t read that message yet, you will find it here and in your email.

If you have traveled internationally for any portion of your Spring Break, please understand that you will be expected to self-quarantine for 14 days at your home. Students should not expect to self-quarantine on campus. (Residential students with a hardship can submit their request to remain on campus for review through the Housing Registry Spring 2020 as directed in the email from me dated 3/11/20.)

This message includes information about continuity of critical student services. Residential students have received specific information regarding being a residential student on the Burlington campus in a separate message.

RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS

If you need instructional supplies (textbooks, notebooks, laptop, additional clothes, specific hardware or software) from your residential space in order to continue with remote instruction, we can allow you to access your residence hall during these three windows of time:

  • Friday, March 13 between 10:00 AM—2:00 PM
  • Sunday, March 15 between 10:00 AM—2:00 PM (note this newly added time window)
  • Monday, March 16 between 10:00 AM—2:00 PM

During these times you are expected to go to your room, gather the things that you need, and depart campus. You do not need to remove all of your belongings. If neither of those times will work for you or you are not able to access the Burlington campus easily, please email reslife@champlain.edu.  Our staff will work with you on a specific plan for you to retrieve what you need.

MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH

Counseling

At this time, the College will provide in-person counseling for local students and distance counseling for current clients who are away from campus. Your counselor will make a plan with you for brief, scheduled check-ins as needed. These check-ins are not intended to replace or provide long-term, intensive psychotherapy, but rather to provide support during this interim period. The method for the provision of distance counseling will be determined by your counselor depending on your needs and preferences. Methods of distance counseling that the Counseling Center may utilize include: telephone, or video, email, chat, text, or social-network-based communication.

Students who are seeking to establish a new counseling relationship can make an appointment using the Counseling Center web page.

The Student Health Center will remain open on the Burlington campus during normal business hours to assist any students who remain on campus. The Student Health team is looking into options for potential remote visits for our psychiatry patients and will be in touch directly with all students who access psychiatry services with details by next week. If you are in the Burlington area and require a medical appointment, please call the Student Health Center first at (802) 860-2711.

Accommodations from the Office of Accessibility

If you currently receive accommodations, you will receive an email from the Office of Accessibility that will provide information to assist your transition to remote instruction.

DINING SERVICES

For students who have been granted permission to remain in campus housing, Sodexo will be serving three meals a day in IDX dining hall, which are covered by your meal plan or which can be purchased individually. Our Sodexo team has modified all food serving methods to ensure the lowest risk and optimal safety. The schedule is:

  • Breakfast 8:30-9:30 AM
  • Lunch 12:00-1:00 PM
  • Dinner 5:00-6:00

Please note that EATS in CCM will be closed during the extended Spring Break and until further notice.

TRANSITION TO REMOTE INSTRUCTION

Your faculty members and academic affairs leaders are fully engaged to ensure readiness for remote instruction in your courses. You will receive additional information from your academic division Dean early next week about ways that the College will support your successful transition to remote instruction.

Your safety and wellbeing remain the top priority for all of us at the College. Please continue to monitor your email and visit our update site regularly for the latest updates and reach me via deansofstudents@champlain.edu if you have questions.
