Introducing a Smoother Transfer Path to Champlain College

Champlain College is one of four Vermont colleges and universities that have committed to simplifying the transfer process for students who earn associate degrees at the Community College of Vermont (CCV) and want to pursue a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year institution in the state.

Champlain College (including Champlain College Online), Norwich University, Saint Michael’s College, and Vermont State University have joined the New England Transfer Guarantee, a program of the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE).

The institutions have signed a memorandum of agreement joining the Vermont Transfer Guarantee, offering the following benefits to students:

  • Students equipped with an associate degree from CCV and who meet the required grade point average are guaranteed admission at the 4-year institution they choose.
  • The application fee and personal essay requirement are waived.
  • Transferring students are considered for institutional support in the form of grants and scholarships. This aid is usually available only to first-time first-year students.

“This agreement will allow students to transfer their CCV degree as a block of credits into a bachelor’s degree program and also creates a more seamless admissions experience, while maximizing their credit transfer to Champlain,” said Associate Director of Transfer Admissions at Champlain College Leah Miller. “We are excited about this opportunity to better support our local transfer students as they begin their next academic journey and become part of the Champlain community.”

Vermont Transfer Guarantee

The first Vermont students transferring under the agreement will begin baccalaureate coursework at the above institutions in the Fall 2024 term, with a larger group anticipated in Spring 2025. Vermont follows its New England counterparts in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island in supporting NEBHE’s New England Transfer Guarantees in their areas, which were installed in 2021. This effort is made possible with support from the Teagle Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, and the Davis Educational Foundation, and the Balfour Foundation.

“These transfer students also bring their diverse life experiences with them to their new campuses, advancing institutions’ diversity and student success goals. Nearly half of the students participating in the program identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color,” said Michael K. Thomas, President and CEO, New England Board of Higher Education.

Recently published data analyzing the first two years of the guarantee shows that transfer students who have taken advantage of the program have made significant progress toward their goals, including increasing their grade point averages post-transfer. Additionally, those who have earned their bachelor’s degrees since transferring have completed their degree programs in just four semesters, on average.

“The Vermont Transfer Guarantee partnership with CCV and Champlain College Online (CCO) provides CCV graduates a clear path to continue their education and obtain a bachelor’s degree with preferred tuition and easy transfer of their previous credits into one of CCO’s many career-aligned programs,” said Sarah McMaster, executive director of marketing and enrollment for CCO. “With CCO’s flexible scheduling and asynchronous classes, students will continue to have the options they need to balance school, work, and life.”
